DYSBARISM: GRADE IV CHAMBER REACTIONS OR INSTANCES OF NEUROCIRCULATORY COLLAPSE OCCURRING IN THE U. S. AIR FORCE, 1950-1955,

Abstract

During the period 1950 to 1955, there were 125 grade IV dysbarism reactions reported in the U. S. Air Force. These reactions were classified into five groups which could briefly be characterized as follows: circulatory reactions following bends with recovery at ground level or within 2 hours; circulatory reactions with recovery followed by delayed reaction; circulatory reactions progressing to shock; initial syncope without previous symptoms; and neurologic signs and symptoms. Among the reactors, 90 to 97 percent were above 30 M' for less than 20 minutes, and 50 to 60 percent for less than 10 minutes. Age and body linear density showed so significant differences between the various reactor groups. Bends was the most frequently reported first symptom. Loss of consciousness was the most frequent symptom reported during the altitude exposure. Skin reactions were most frequently associated with delayed (group 2) and neurologic (group 5) reactions.
