COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ADRENAL FUNCTION AT SEA LEVEL AND AT HIGH ALTITUDE. THE RESPONSE TO ACTH,

Abstract

In two groups of subjects, similar as to age and physical characteristics, intravenous infusions of 2 and 5 I.U. of ACTH were used to determine the sensitivity of the adrenal gland to ACTH. One group was composed of native residents of Morococha (altitude 14,900 feet); the other consisted of men living in Lima (sea level). The response was estimated by the increase in urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroids and 17-hydroxycorticosteroids, and a fall in the eosinophilic blood count. (Author)
