CONCERNING THE GENEALOGY OF LONG PERIOD FAMILIES AT L SUBSCRIPT 4,

Abstract

The family of long period orbits at L sub 4 does not evolve in a continuous manner with the mass ratio. Discontinuities appear not only at the mass ratios for which the long period at the equilibrium is a multiple of the short period, but also at mass ratios where the global analysis of the family detects singular bifurcation orbits. Extended numerical continuations carried with very great accuracy enable us to follow the evolution of the long period family from the inner resonance 1/4 to the inner resonance 1/1 through collapses at the equilibrium, mergers with bridges and redistribution of branches. The study stresses the extreme complexity of the phase space around an equilibrium for a one-parameter family of conservative Hamiltonian systems with two degrees of freedom. (Author)
