THEORETICAL CALCULATIONS CONCERNING BETA DECAY.

Abstract

A calculation of allowed but very-much-hindered beta-decay spectra was completed and applied to the beta transition from 14O to the 14N ground state. This calculation permits the use of the experimentally-obtained spectral shape as a criterion for evaluating the various nuclear models. A class of such models is described which reproduces the observed ft value and shape of the 14O decay. A discussion is presented of other transitions within the mass-14 system and of ambiguities in determining the Gamow-Teller allowed matrix element. A computer program was prepared to calculate 'exact' electron radial functions treating the nucleus as a uniformly-charged sphere. In particular, the program avoids the phase-error of earlier calculations, and permits 'averaging' over the nuclear volume. A comparison with previously-reported analytic approximation is given.
