PARALYZING ANIMAL POISONS.

Abstract

Observations were made on the behavior of female Philanthus triangulum (F.) in the field. Breeding experiments of this species in the laboratory have been continued. The collection and biological standardization of the venom of Microbracon hebetor (Say) have become routine techniques. The effect of a large number of compounds on the thermostability of this venom has been determined. Apart from ZnSO4 all stabilizers seem to be protein in nature. The activity spectrum of the venom of M. hebetor has been extended. With a few exceptions only Lepidoptera are sensitive to the venom. A further survey of different types of action potentials and miniature potentials in a number of muscles in a number of insect species has been made. In these muscles some fibers show three different types of action potentials and two different types of miniature potentials. Sections of the nerves innervating these muscles usually show 3 different kinds of axons. The venom of M. hebetor which affects the depolarizing miniature potentials has no effect on the hyperpolarizing miniature potentials. Preliminary experiments indicate that Anoplius viaticus F. may not possess a paralyzing venom. (Author)
