SINUSOIDAL HORNS.

Abstract

It is shown theoretically that the sinusoid satisfies Salmon's criteria for a good horn shape. It is also shown theoretically that a sinusoidal horn will effect impedance transformation and experimentally that it enhances the directivity of an underwater transducer. It is observed that such horns have been in use for a long time in certain musical instruments, such as the English horn, and an explanation is given of its function in the instrument. (Author)
