RELATIONSHIP OF CHRONIC GASTRIC ULCERATION TO EXPERIMENTAL CEREBELLAR VERMAL LESIONS.
Abstract
The relationship between lesions of the posterior cerebellar vermis and production of gastric ulcers was studied in cats. Of the 24 animals receiving lesions, 16% subsequently developed ulcerations of the gastric mucosa. Of these subjects, one died 48 hours postoperatively of ulcers of the gastrointestinal tract; three others had chronic ulcerations of the stomach at the time they were sacrificed (average of 30 days postoperatively); and another had extensive hyperemia of the stomach mucosa. Ulcer formation was apparently related directly to the extent and location of the lesion, and unrelated to restraint or vestibular stimulation. This specificity of conditions would appear to provide a useful technic for further studying the variables relevant to ulcer formuation and their treatment after brain surgery. (Author)
