THE STABILIZATION OF STANNOUS FLUORIDE IN A DENTAL PROPHYLAXIS PASTE.

Abstract

A dental prophylaxis paste containing 2.0% stannous fluoride in water-free solution was tested for its ability to reduce enamel solubility. The paste was applied with a rubber cup and also by a 2-minute topical application of a slurry made of equal proportions of the paste and water. Evaluation continued over an aging period of 16 weeks. The prophylaxis paste, applied full strength in a rubber cup, reduced enamel solubility in the range of 55% to 63%. Age did not significantly affect the protective performance of the paste. When the paste was applied as a topical application, its protection ranged from 58% to 72%. A significant increase in effectiveness was associated with aging. It is suggested that chemical stability, a factor related to the preservation of the stannous ion, is induced in this paste by placing the stannous fluoride in solution in glycerin and scrupulously avoiding the incorporation of water at any stage of compounding.
