MINIATURE TRANSDUCERS FOR MEASUREMENT OF CARDIAC DIMENSIONS.

Abstract

Large ultrasonic transducers have been used in the past to measure changes in the internal dimensions of the left ventricle of experimental animals, but these large transducers were difficult to insert into the ventricular chamber. Also, they tended to produce cardiac lesions if extra care in placement were not taken. The report describes the fabrication and use in experimental animals of miniature sonomicrometer transducers that are approximately half the size of the older ones. The new miniature transducers have been used for the past 12 months without causing any cardiac problems and are exceedingly easy to insert into the left ventricular chamber. They are considered superior to the larger transducer and should be used in work involving the measurement of cardiac or vascular dimensions. (Author)
