PHYSICOCHEMICAL INTERACTION OF RHENIUM WITH ELEMENTS OF THE PLATINUM GROUP AND PROPERTIES OF CERTAIN ALLOYS,

Abstract

A review is given of the physicochemical interaction of rhenium with the platinum-group metals (ruthenium, osmium, tungsten, palladium, rhodium, iridium, platinum). The solubility of rhenium in these metals and vice versa is illustrated with graphs. Rhenium forms a continuous series of solid solutions with ruthenium and osmium; with rhodium, palladium, iridium and platinum, rhenium forms systems represented by peritectic-type phase diagrams with two limited solid solutions. No chemical compounds are formed in these systems. The relation between the difference in the melting points of the metals and the peritectic point is discussed. The mechanical properties of alloys formed by rhenium with platinum-group metals are discussed (hardness of alloys of the system rhenium-ruthenium-osmium, effect of rhenium on the hardness and strength of palladium, effect of annealing temperature on the strength and plasticity of palladium-rhenium alloys). The article concludes with a description of the electrical properties of such alloys (resistance, thermoelectromotive force). (Author)
