INFLUENCE OF COLLISIONS ON THE INSTABILITY OF AN ELECTRON BEAM IN A PLASMA,

Abstract

The report contains a numerical and analytical study of the dispersion relation of a Lorentzian beam in a cold plasma with collisions. Numerical results for the growth rate, the mode structure and the group velocity are presented for selected parameters, analytical generalizations of these results are given, both for the case of real wavenumber and real frequency. In particular it is shown that in either case the high frequency instability is quenched for a sufficiently large velocity spread and collision frequency, and that this quenching occurs over a much larger parameter range than was previously assumed.
