SELF-ADJUSTING VEHICLE SIMULATORS,

Abstract

The basic automatic adjustment technique involves integrating or averaging a measurement of a subject's performance over a period of time and utilizing the average score to adjust automatically certain parameters of the operator's task. For example, the frequency and/or amplitude of a forcing function may be modified, the information content of a display varied, a control signal modified, or the dynamic characteristics of the simulated vehicle may be changed in consequence of a change in the measurement of performance employed. In each case, the task becomes more difficult as the performance improves. The aspect of performance measured determines the type of performance reinforced by use of this simulator. Among various tracking performance scores that can be easily adapted to most vehicle simulators are integrated absolute error, mean square error, and time-within-tolerance. (Author)
