SOME STUDIES OF WHISTLER MODE AMPLIFICATION,

Abstract

The paper is concerned with the instabilities predicted when a transverse electromagnetic plasma wave, propagating in the whistler mode parallel to a uniform magnetic field, interacts with a mono-energetic beam of gyrating electrons. Several forms of this problem have been studied in recent years. The present studies differ from previous work in that they present detailed numerical results for electron beam/whistler mode interaction, taking into account the effects of non-zero plasma electron temperature and collisions, and that the instabilities occurring are identified as absolute or convective by means of appropriate stability criteria.
