MEASUREMENT OF ENTHALPY DISTRIBUTION AT THE EXIT OF A 5-MW ARC HEATER AS OBTAINED BY AN ABLATION TECHNIQUE.

Abstract

The enthalpy profile was measured at the exit of a 5-MW arc heater with a Mach number 3.82 nozzle operating at a total pressure of 10 atm and total enthalpy of 2700 Btu/lb. The enthalpy distribution was obtained by means of a technique which relates the enthalpy to the ablation rate of a material of known characteristics. The technique is limited only by the manner in which the impact pressure at the ablating surface is measured and having a material of known ablation characteristics. Large gradients in the enthalpy distribution were eliminated by installing a stilling chamber between the arc heater and exit nozzle. (Author)
