COLLISIONAL WHISTLER INSTABILITIES.

Abstract

The dispersion of transverse electromagnetic waves in a magnetized Lorentz gas of electrons is calculated. Instabilities due to collisional feedback phenomena are predicted when the electron distribution is sharply peaked, yet isotropic, in a velocity range where elastic resonance scattering does occur.
