HEAVY SECTION STEEL TOUGHNESS CHARACTERIZATION PROGRESS REPORT ENDING 31 AUGUST 1969.

Abstract

An investigation was made of the fracture toughness of thick-section steels as influenced by mechanical constraint and through-thickness metallurgical variations. The primary tool used in these research studies is the dynamic tear (DT) test. This progress report includes the following: (1) toughness variation through the thickness of HSST plate 03, (2) comparison of toughness of 5/8-in. DT specimens (in the RW and WR orientations) cut from HSST plate 02, and (3) thick section DT tests from HSST plate 01. (Author)
