INTERFACES IN FIBER-REINFORCED METAL MATRIX COMPOSITES. A STATE-OF-THE-ARTS SURVEY.

Abstract

A state-of-the-art investigation of interfacial composition in high-modulus, high-strength, low-density fiber- and whisker-reinforced metal matrix composite materials is conducted. Primary emphasis is placed on boron, silicon carbide, and sapphire reinforcing materials. Kinetic and thermodynamic compatibility data are compiled and several filament-metal matrix material combinations are defined for use in high-energy-rate dynamic compaction fabrication. General composite materials evaluation methods are briefly described. (Author)
