SYNTHESIS OF AROMATIC OR ALIPHATIC POLYSULFONE RUBBER.

Abstract

Polypropylene sulfide and poly(ethylene sulfide-propylene sulfide), both containing unsaturation, were prepared and cured. The polypropylene sulfide-based vulcanizate, although poorer in original properties, was better in retention of properties after heat aging. Surface oxidized samples of poly(ethylene sulfide-propylene sulfide) showed very low oil and fuel swell but the oxidized material was water soluble. Satisfactory cures were not obtained using the polymers which contained no unsaturation. High polymers could not be obtained with diarylsulfones and blocks of dimethylsiloxanes or fluorocarbons.
