DIPOLE MOMENTS OF CYCLIC CARBONIC ACID ESTERS,

Abstract

Dipole moments of cyclic esters of carbonic acid in benzene solution are measured and compared with theoretical calculations. Dipole moments are reported for ethylene carbonate (4-80D), 1:3 propylene carbonate (5-21D) and 1:3 butylene carbonate (5-23D). These values are shown to be consistent with theoretically calculated values for the corresponding open chain compounds dimethyl carbonate and diethyl carbonate in the appropriate stereochemical configurations.
