STUDY OF VARIATIONS OF THE GEOMAGNETIC FIELD AND RELATED SOLAR AND TERRESTRIAL PHENOMENA.

Abstract

During the period of the contract, geomagnetic variations having durations ranging from 0.02 seconds to several days have been investigated, and mathematical procedures for spherical harmonic analysis of world-wide geomagnetic data have been prepared. This investigation included the collection of data by the operation of field recording stations and by obtaining world-wide observatory data from the World Data Center; the reduction of the data to digital and graphic presentations suitable for further study; and the analysis of the reduced data to obtain information on the nature and origins of the geomagnetic variations and their relationship to solar and other geophysical phenomena. In the course of the investigation specialized electronic instruments have been designed and constructed. (Author)
