AFCRL FACILITIES OPERATION.

Abstract

Two PIN diode detectors were developed for monitoring bremsstrahlung and electron radiation environments. The detectors were calibrated against LiF thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD). A lithium drifted detector was assembled for gamma ray spectroscopy. The system was calibrated with isotopes of Co57 and Ba133 and found to have a resolution of 20 keV in the 50 to 100 keV range. Bremsstrahlung radiation production from the AFCRL linear accelerator as a function of tungsten target thickness was studied with TLD's Maximum on-axis dose at one meter was obtained with a 0.030 inch thick target which agrees with the predicted optimum converter thickness. Using a PIN diode detector system, bremsstrahlung field maps were obtained for several target thicknesses. The linear accelerator 10 MeV electron beam was mapped with both TLD's and a PIN diode detector. Several modifications to the AFCRL LINAC we were accomplished. These included a remote trigger, a permanent cable run, an external bremsstrahlung converter, a beam stopper and a rotating wheel sample holder. The latter, when equipped with various foils and a PIN diode detector, can be used to make electron beam range measurements. (Author)
