ROLLING-CONTACT BEARING REFERENCE SUMMARY.

Abstract

The reference summary contains information concerning the design and performance of rolling-contact bearings (ball bearings, roller bearings, and needle bearings). It is broken down into five general topics: (1) principles of rolling contact bearings, (2) lubricants and materials, (3) special aerospace bearing applications, (4) failure diagnosis, and (5) future trends in rolling-contact bearing lubrication. Special design and operating conditions encountered in aerospace applications are emphasized, such as high speed, high temperature, hard vacuum, cryogenic temperatures, and oscillating motion. Various lubricants used in rolling-contact bearings, including oils, greases, solid lubricants, and special lubricants for an aerospace environment are discussed and evaluated. (Author)
