FORMULATION OF A HAMILTONIAN WITH RELATIVISTIC EFFECTS FOR HEAVY ATOMS.

Abstract

The work reported is concerned with problems of atomic scattering and structure. The principal effort was devoted to the problem of the construction of a configuration space Hamiltonian describing a heavy atom; this work is still in progress. Another general problem that has been investigated is the reaction mechanisms for electron-molecule (or molecular ion) recombination; a new and more fundamental understanding has been achieved here, opening the possibility for an a priori calculation of the important reaction of dissociative recombination. These and other efforts are described. (Author)
