CHANGES IN INFRARED SPECTRA DURING IONIZATION AGING OF POLYMER FILMS,

Abstract

Polyethylene (I), polystyrene (II) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (III) films were exposed to ionization discharges for 15-100 hours at room temperature in air or under oxygen. Ir spectra of treated and untreated samples were compared. The most apparent changes were observed in I, the spectra of III did not change, and the spectra of II showed small changes. The changes in spectra were accompanied by a decrease in resolution and an increase in background. The relative changes of I, II, and III films caused by ionization correspond to changes due to thermal oxidation and to irradiation in air. The changes in spectra agree well with the rate of oxygen absorption in the polymer films. The results show that I has a tendency toward oxidation and crosslinking, but is stable to ionization aging. III is very easily aged by ionization, but is not oxidized and crosslinked by ionization. The properties of II are intermediate between those of I and III. (Author)
