ANTIMALARIA DRUG SCREEN IN MONKEYS.

Abstract

The objective of the study was the evaluation of antimalarial activity of compounds against blood-induced simian malaria. The program includes several areas of effort including: (1) maintenance of a monkey colony of sufficient size to meet the testing demands, (2) determination of drug toxicity, and (3) determination of drug antimalarial effect. The tests were conducted in normal rhesus monkeys that weighed 2 - 3 kgm. A Malayan strain of Plasmodium knowlesi was used to infect the monkeys. The results of the study were organized into 2 groups - drugs tested individually and drugs tested in combinations. Work with each drug was further subdivided into toxicity test evaluations, antimalarial drug test evaluations and postsplenectomy observations. (Author)
