A STUDY OF SPIN WAVES IN UNENCUMBERED FERROMAGNETIC NI AND FE FILMS.

Abstract

A summary of work completed in the study of spin waves in thin ferromagnetic films is given. A theoretical model which includes damping and surface conditions is used to develop a computer program to predict resonance peak heights and spacing as well as the distribution of the rf field across the film with perpendicular pumping. An ion beam deposition system is described from both a theoretical and experimental approach. Thin indium films are deposited using the ion beam deposition system to obtain spot diameters of 0.075 cm. with beam currents of 0.000 000 01 amperes. The practical limit on resolution for this system is set by chromatic aberration. This limit can be reduced by improved ion sources. The sputtering of indium ions impinging on indium targets reaches unity at about 550 eV as compared to predicted values of 200 eV. (Author)
