INTERACTION BETWEEN ARBOVIRUS AND MYXOVIRUS. INHIBITION OF JEV AND JEV-RNA MULTIPLICATIONS BY INACTIVATED NWS STRAIN OF INFLUENZA VIRUS.

Abstract

The NWS strain of influenza virus inactivated by ultraviolet irradiation (UV-NWS) suppressed the multiplication of Japanese encephalitis virus infectious ribonucleic acid (JE-RNA) in chick embryo cell monolayers. This inhibition phenomenon was varied by depending upon the conditions used for experiments. When 1.0 M Na2SO4 solution was used as a diluent for inoculation of JE-RNA, the UV-NWS suppressed the multiplication of JE-RNA only in the case of simultaneous addition, and when 0.1% DEAE-dextran solution was used as a diluent, the UV-NWS inhibited the JE-RNA multiplication even after 90 minutes of infectious RNA inoculation. These findings may not be due to differences between adsorption times of infectious RNA diluted with two different kins of solutions, because there were no differences between them. Within the limits of the present study, it is impossible to determine whether this inhibitory action is similar to that of interferon itself, however, it is obvious that the effect of the UV-NWS acts upon an early stage of virus development, and has no influence on the stages after assembly of virus particle.
