CHARACTERIZATION OF FILLER AND INSULATION IN WATERPROOF CABLE,

Abstract

Communication cable technology has been revolutionized by the development of waterproof cable designs. Specification of the filler, insulation, and sheath depends on the solution to many interesting questions. Answers to those questions required studies on the composition of the filler, interaction of materials, and long-term performance. Data on the petrolatum/polyethylene filler are presented, from which compositions of desired characteristics can be formulated. Mechanical performance of insulation and sheath materials in contact with petrolatum is discussed to justify the use of polypropylene for the insulation and modified polyethylene for the sheath. Finally, data on the long-term performance of the petrolatum-exposed insulation in an oxidative environment are presented. (Author)
