EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF BLUNT BASE HEAT TRANSFER IN AN AXISYMMETRIC TURBULENT SUPERSONIC SEPARATED FLOW,

Abstract

The heat transfer from a blunt base immersed in an axisymmetric turbulent supersonic separated flow was experimentally measured. The investigation was conducted at a Mach number and Reynolds number per foot of 3.88 and 16,700,000, respectively. Experimental heat transfer data, determined by a transient heat transfer technique, were obtained for both heated and cooled base conditions. A series of three models were used, permitting the measurement of an average value of base heat transfer, as well as the angular and radial variations. The experimental data obtained in the investigation were compared with published experimental data and with recently published correlating parameters for both base heating and base cooling. (Author)
