SUSCEPTIBILITY TO STEM RUST BY SPECIMENS FROM THE WORLD WHEAT COLLECTION AT THE ALL-UNION SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF PLANT GROWING (VIR),

Abstract

Susceptibility of the standard collection of variety-differentiators to stem rust under the field conditions of western regions of the USSR depends to a great degree on the meteorological conditions existing in the period of development of the disease. With the exception of Tr. timopheevi wheat, no absolutely immune varieties and specimens were revealed. Against a background of a strong manifestation of the disease a number of specimens of soft and hard wheat were isolated which were practically resistant. These may be very valuable material for the development of resistant forms by means of hybridization. (Author)
