MODEL TESTS OF HYDROFOIL-EQUIPPED FLOATS.

Abstract

The report presents the results of a brief series of tests conducted on scale models of typical, fixed-float aircraft alighting gear retrofitted with two different hydrofoil arrangements -- one with a foil on each float and a second with the foil between the two floats. In addition, tests were conducted on the bare float configurations to provide a basis for comparison. In water-based aircraft design it has been found that the addition of a small hydrofoil beneath the keel of a hull often improves its take-off and landing characteristics. Because of this past success, it was proposed that consideration be given to modifying existing floats by the addition of small submerged hydrofoils. Accordingly, the study was undertaken to investigate the possible hydrodynamic advantages that may result from the retrofit of a hydrofoil to float-type alighting gear. The major emphasis of the test program was to optimize the location, attitude and extension of the hydrofoil relative to the float installation. Since the study was of an exploratory nature, comparisons were based on constant-thrust accelerated take-off tests with a brief check made on the calm water constant-speed resistance characteristics of each system.
