SOLAR X-RAY OBSERVATION OF FORBIDDEN LINES IN THE HELIUM ISOELECTRONIC SEQUENCE.

Abstract

The 1s sup 2 singlet S sub 0 - 1s2p singlet P sub 1 resonance and the 1s sup 2 singlet S sub 0 - 1s2p triplet P sub 1 intercombination lines in the helium-like ions of carbon, oxygen, neon, and magnesium observed in the solar corona are accompanied by strong, longer wavelength satellites. Gabriel and Jordan identify these wavelength satellites as due to single-photon decay of the 1s2s triplet S sub 1 level, and point out that the intensity ratio of the triplet P sub 1 and triplet S sub 1 lines is a sensitive function of electron density at typical coronal densities. The report gives the relative intensities of each of the three lines and discusses the coronal densities that they predict. (Author)
