GAS CHROMATOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF LACQUER SOLVENTS CONTAINING NAPHTHA DILUENT,

Abstract

Certain solvent types used in surface coatings tend to form free radicals when exposed to solar radiation. Radicals are extremely unstable and are capable of multiple reactions, some of which produce undesirable end products that contribute to air contamination. The object of this investigation was to provide an analytical test procedure which is suitable for the determination of photochemically reactive solvents in the presence of petroleum hydrocarbons. Gas-liquid chromatography was used for the identification and determination of lacquer solvents. The analysis was made possible through the use of a highly selective fractionating column which rejects saturated hydrocarbons, thus allowing the isolation and determination of the principal solvents.
