QUEUES WITH BALKING AND THEIR APPLICATION TO AN INVENTORY PROBLEM.

Abstract

The report considers an alternative to the (s,S) ordering policy associated with inventory systems. Envision a subwarehouse, maintaining an inventory of finite capacity S, that holds material (discrete or continuous) for future use in some process. In order to maintain a stock on hand, the subwarehouse places orders for an amount v of replacement stock with a warehouse. An order may be one of two distinct types. It is a regular order if, at the instant the order is placed, the inventory level is at least v. The time it takes the warehouse to process a regular order is called a regular service time. It is an emergency order if, at the instant the order is placed, the inventory level is less than v. The time to process an emergency order is assumed to be instantaneous, or at least effectively zero. It is demonstrated that this inventory system is closely related to a problem in queueing theory--queueing systems with a balking at queues of a fixed length. (Author)
