RIBBED SLAB PENETRATION-A SUMMARY REPORT.

Abstract

The report summarizes all work done on the comparison of 1.25-MeV gamma radiation penetration of ribbed slabs with the equivalent smeared-out slabs. It is shown how to calculate the average, maximum, and minimum ratios, using empirical formulas and constants, for a wide range of geometric parameters and for four basic source types: plane isotropic, 'fan', broad beam normally incident, and broad beam incident at 60 degrees from normal. Comparisons with experiment are indicated. The results are applied to several questions, and general criteria are given for which the smeared slab approximation may be expected to be valid. (Author)
