GEOGRAPHY AND THE PROPERTIES OF SURFACES. GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION OF A MATRIX WITH APPLICATIONS IN SPATIAL LOCATION.

Abstract

The paper develops an algorithm for the solution of one of the typical problems in architectural and urban design--the allocation of a set of spaces with locational demands relative to each other. The problem is analogous to the fitting of a new science complex and gymnasium into an existing college campus; or the expansion of a large hospital by the additon of new service spaces. The process of solution is analogous to cutting up colored squares representing functional spaces and spreading them around a site drawing until a satisfactory 'fit' is achieved. (Author)
