A THEORETICAL STUDY OF TWO-STAGE TESTING
Abstract
When items cannot be answered correctly by guessing, certain two- stage testing procedures are about as effective over the ability range of interest as the 'best' up-and-down procedures studied previously. A two-stage testing procedure consists of a routing test followed by one of several alternative second-stage tests. The choice of the second-stage test administered is determined by the examinee's score on the routing test. The study attempts to find, under specified restrictions, some good designs for two- stage testing. A 'good' procedure is one that provides reasonably accurate measurement for examinees who would obtain near-perfect or near-zero scores on a conventional test.
