ON THE STRUCTURE OF A HETEROGENEOUS COMPUTING SYSTEM, CONTROLLED BY A LARGE DIGITAL COMPUTER,

Abstract

The possibility of integrating a number of medium-speed general-purpose digital computers in a system to be controlled by one central general-purpose computer with a speed of 1,000,000 op/sec is investigated. Such a system would permit each computer to utilize any peripheral device, thus eliminating the need for multiple I/O units - a luxury in most computer centers. The optimization of all machines in this system would not occur as a result of maximum loading of the central machine but as a consequence of concurrent exploitation of the reserves of each machine. This system will permit easy maintenance, i.e., debugging automation may be introduced, as well as rapid execution and simulation of peripheral computer multiprogramming, more complete processing of source and target data, automatic (jog) logging, and automatic preventive maintenance. While the efficiency of the central machine is hereby reduced, the structure of this system is justified by the fact that numerous manual tasks can be automated. The system represents a distributed computer system with partially variable structure and parallel-serial data exchange, random-access, and hierarchical control.
