TICKS AND MITES OF CHIPMUNKS IN PRIMORE REGION,

Abstract

Four tick species, 15 Gamasoidea and 10 species of Trombiculidae were found on Eutamias sibiricus, 8 species of Gamasides and 4 Trombiculids are new for this host. Hirstionyssus pavlovskyi Zem. (Gamasoidea) and Gahrliepia festiva Schluger (Trombiculidae) are new species. The species found on burunduks are not host-specific and can also be found on other animals. The general nature of the acarofauna on the burunduk and the numeric dominance of individual species are dependent upon the landscape, vegetation, and climate, this being particularly evident in the case of Ixodidae and Trombiculidae. Owing to their being able to live in the vicinity of rural settlements burunduks may introduce ticks into residential areas, when penetrating them. (Author)
