EFFECTS OF PHENOTHIAZINES ON CERTAIN BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS OF THE HUMAN RED CELL DURING STORAGE.

Abstract

Various concentrations of four closely related phenothiazine derivatives were added to CPD blood under blood banking conditions and their effect on various enzymes, intermediates, and on the composition of the cell membrane was studied. Of all the parameters investigated, the most significant findings were the levels of 2,3-DPG and ATP which were found to be significantly higher in the presence of chlorpromazine than in the controls during prolonged storage. Of the four phenothiazines investigated, only chlorpromazine exhibited this property. (Author)
