THE KINEMATICS OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS,

Abstract

A study has been made of reactions between various ions (Ar(+), N2(+), CO(+), and CH3OH(+) with D2 and CD4. In some of the reactions the temperature of the target gas was varied (from -190C to +20C, and the velocity distribution of the products in the forward direction was studied. From analyses of the results, it was possible to deduce the existence of a collision complex (with a lifetime of less than a half rotational period) in the reactions of Ar(+), N2(+), and CO(+) with D2. In reactions of CH3OH(+) with D2, the transition from collision complex to stripping mechanism was studied. (Author)
