ON THE PATHOGENIC ACTION OF IXODID TICK BITES ON GUINEA PIGS,

Abstract

Skin functions are extremely important and diverse. An injury to the histological structure of the skin and the functional disturbances this leads to disruption of thermoregulation, secretory activity, gas exchange, and other functions. Moreover, injury to the integument opens the door to infection, while intact skin is an impenetrable obstacle for most infective agents. Various arthropods, including ticks, while attacking animals injure their integument and change its anatomic-morphological structure, which affects the normal activity of these organisms. The skin--a most valuable animal raw material--loses its quality. Especially important changes occur within the skin during parasitism by ixodid ticks. At attachment sites of ixodid ticks, the skin becomes hairless and is covered by scabs with bleeding areas, suppurations, and swellings in the form of tubercles.
