RESEARCH DIRECTED TOWARD DEVELOPMENT OF A HOMOGENEOUS MARTIAN COORDINATE SYSTEM.

Abstract

The collected results of the Mars Map Project (1958-1969), with detailed results for the final two years, are presented in 6 sections: (1) the new physical ephemeris of Mars and the definition, measurement and reduction of areographic coordinates, (2) derivation of areographic coordinates from visual observations in 1941 and 1958, (3) derivation of areographic coordinates from photographic observations in 1954 and 1956, (4) reduction of all published sets of areographic coordinates of the period 1877 to 1954 to the new physical ephemeris system, (5) derivation by numerical mapping techniques of mean standard areographic coordinates of the best-observed stations in this system, (6) reduction of all meridian transit observations of the period 1877 to 1958 to the new ephemeris system, a check of the rotation period of Mars and derivation of mean longitudes for the best observed stations.
