EIGHT-CHANNEL AUTOMATIC RECORDING VISCOMETER.

Abstract

An instrument has been designed for the measurement of specific viscosities of polymer solutions. It operates sequentially eight Ubbelhode viscometers and prints out the time interval for a solution, falling under gravity through a precision bore capillary tube, to pass between two reference levels. An interrupted light beam technique is used to obtain the fall times of the solutions. Previous methods using this technique failed at higher temperatures due to the limitations of the detectors. This defect has been overcome by employing fibre-optic light guides as coupling elements to the viscometer, thus allowing the detectors and light sources to be mounted externally where they are not subjected to the higher temperatures.
