OCCAM'S RAZOR NEEDS NEW BLADES

Abstract

The use of alpha-level tests for fixed alpha is not a valid 'blade' for Occam's Razor. In the most important cases of scientific inference, the null hypothesis is known to be false, and consequently the type I error probability is irrelevant. The author points out the lack of an adequate formulation of the problems so that practical solutions can be derived.
