MODULAR SOLID STATE MODULATOR DEVELOPMENT.

Abstract

The report summarizes the results of the first quarter's effort on a twelve month program to develop a new type of modular, solid state radar modulator. The modulator will have an average power capability of 25 KW (3.85 MW peak). The main power train design was completed and attention is now being directed to details of control circuitry and packaging. The modulator design is unique in that it employs solid state Reverse Switching Rectifiers (RSR's) in an eight module system to generate high power pulses at comparatively low voltage. A high turns ratio pulse transformer converts the pulse to the high voltage form required by an RF tube. A special feature of the modulator will be its capability of operation at any of three different pulse widths (15, 30, or 55 microseconds). (Author)
