LOW TEMPERATURE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF POLYCRYSTALLINE NIOBIUM AND MOLYBDENUM.

Abstract

The energy of twinning was found for polycrystalline niobium specimens at -196C. These results derived from 'dead-load' tests on a modified creep machine compared with previous estimates derived from stress relaxation tests and gave an energy of the order of 10 to the 9th power ergs/cu cm. This high energy value and the metallographic features of twinning were explained in terms of a continuous nucleation theory of twinning. Initial experimental results from piezoelectric strain gauges were also given. (Author)
