RECOGNIZING SYMBOLIC INFORMATION BY THE CORRELATED GROUP METHOD,
Abstract
The recognition of some object which belongs to a particular set is defined as the procedure of detecting in this object those properties or symbols characteristic of the set, and one of symbols which applies only to it. The procedure for recognition of a set of such symbols is given in the form of two equations. It is asserted that the problem posed by this procedure is a fundamentally difficult one and that its final solution has as yet not been found, particularly in connection with the design of reading machines. Two possible approaches are offered. The first is to use training automata; for example, the kind of perception which automatically forms a set of symbols and a set of standards. The second approach is connected with the formation of these sets by a human operator. The problem arises of constructing criteria for defining the elements of the set so that they would take into account all possible forms of defective symbols in the set.
