GLASS FORMATION IN THE SYSTEM P2O5-Sb2O3-B2O3,

Abstract

The effect of composition on the formation of glass in the system P2O5-Sb2O3-B2O3 and the properties of glasses produced was determined by visual observation, X-ray diffraction analysis, IR spectroscopy, and differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis. Results obtained by visual observations were in agreement with the X diffraction data, and melting at 1100 C gave similar results, although the region of glass formation was larger at the higher temperature. The effects observed by thermal analysis correspond to the melting and dehydration of the raw materials, followed by incompletely explained endothermic and exothermic effects which are associated with chemical and physical transformations; the last endothermic effect at 500-600 C corresponds to the simultaneous increase in the electric conductivity of the melt, indicating formation of an ionized liquid phase. The IR spectrum indicated formation of new chemical bonds. (Author)
