METHODS OF INVESTIGATING SURFACE CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS WITH THE AID OF IR SPECTROSCOPY,
Abstract
A brief review of different infrared spectroscopic methods used in the study of chemical compounds formed on surfaces is presented. The results obtained by the present authors and others for porous glass treated with water vapor and different modifying agents (trimethylchlorosilane, dimethyldichlorosilane, methacrylic acid, and styrene) are presented. Experiments have shown that the adhesive bond strength of polystyrene to glass surfaces unmodified and modified with trimethylchlorosilane was 4460 and 88.5 erg/(sq cm) respectively. It is concluded that infrared spectroscopic methods may be successfully employed in the study of surface bond formation. (Author)
